story of a chocolate cheesecake
story of a chocolate cheesecake
this is a story spanning the total of approximately eleven and a half hours. on friday, a decision is made to produce a chocolate cheesecake; recipe sourced from a magazine (whose origin is unknown at this point of time). in light of the fact that cheesecakes require overnight refrigeration, the conclusion is drawn that cake in question must be baked on friday itself in order to be ready for saturday dinner dessert (to enable the chefs to savor their creation during the screening of shrek on telly).
utensils required: measuring cups, baking tin, weighing scale, electric mixer, and various ingredients. the ingredients are purchased from leading supermarket coles in the afternoon. unable to locate other variations of 'chocolate biscuits', tiny teddies are decided on. the definition of 'cream cheese' created a minor dilemma: is cream cheese cottage cheese? this needed external confirmation, but in the end the right type was bought.
in the evening, 3/4 of chefs in question attended bible study on campus. one chef had to return home earlier due to unavoidable circumstances, and began preparation of chocolate cheesecake with remaining chef back home. nevertheless, completion of creation could not be accomplished without afore-mentioned utensils (which happened to be in one certain chef's room) which obviously meant they had to wait for that chef's return home.
meanwhile other two chefs who were under no obligation to return home early, decided to stay on a bit longer, seeing as a member of bible study was celebrating her birthday and one chef wanted to go with her to new college to cut the cake. this chef dragged other chef along, and ended up spending too long a time there.
this naughty chef sort of forgot about other two chefs waiting and is sincerely sorry about this incident. both chefs finally returned home at around 12a.m. after receiving indignant call. naughty chef felt guilty and contrite (naughty chef earlier assumed chefs back home would not start preparation yet and could therefore postpone cake-making), so naughty chef got all the utensils from room and work on the cake continued (the tiny teddies had already been nicely crumbled as the cake base using a secret technique, and the chocolate had been melted with the butter).
with all four chefs working on cake production, the rest of its construction ran smoothly, albeit the fact that the chocolate butter mixture was rather crumbly instead of smooth because it hardened again after being melted initially (naughty chef feels bad about this too). in an attempt to remelt it, the butter mixture was popped into the microwave oven. it was discovered that the microwave oven can burn food items.
nevertheless, further work on the cake went well, and cake mix is poured into the tin till the very brim. miraculously it did not spill. it was earlier determined that instead of baking the cake at 150 C in a water bath for an hour, this cake would be baked at 100 C for 3 hours. this calculation is based on the chemistry and physics background of one of the chefs. Note: knowledge of these two fields of science were essential in the successful product of baking efforts as estimation was liberally employed in almost every aspect of the whole process.
at around 2a.m., cake was safely in oven, and two chefs are half-asleep. another chef bravely volunteers for the task of removing cake from oven in 3 hours time (this chef unintentionally fell asleep later and removed cake at 6.15 a.m., but that did not affect final outcome). cake out of the oven weighed about 2 kilos and was jelly-like in appearance. chef who removed cake came to the conclusion that cake would harden if put into the refrigerator (since it contains butter and chocolate, which harden when cooled) and did so.
on saturday all chefs went for a movie at eastgardens, Pirates of the Carribbean 3, accompanied by 2 others. the three hour long movie was quite good, although there exists a puzzlement on how one can watch nearly half the movie, THEN finally realize that 'the black pearl' is referring to a ship.
after movie, all chefs ran back home to prepare dinner. sausage stew, mixed vegetables, garlic cream chicken and garlic bread are the dishes for the night. chefs watched shrek while indulging in food, anticipating the christening of chocolate cheesecake. on a side note, although it might SEEM to be too much food, there is almost nil possibility of the food going uneaten when these chefs dine together.
finally the 2 kilo cake was removed from the fridge. after flipping the cake several times to remove it from the cake tin, it was finally cut and sampled.
to put it in italian terms: intenso! all the chefs agreed that cake can be masqueraded as a product of a top bakery, and are all extremely pleased with it. nevertheless, only a quarter of la chocolate cheesecake was consumed due to the fact it is extremely rich, dense and filling.
now the chefs are looking for new challenges in the cake-baking field, ever encouraged by their successes so far.
