alone, or am i?

Yo:

celebrations. aren't they family-oriented occasions? not just the actual event itself, but the planning and everything else that makes the whole thing work out in the end? mmmz. t'would seem my family is an oddity then.

at least, that's how i feel after today, puttering about in the kitchen for 7 hours to ready the chinese new year goodies. i don't feel like it was a waste of time or anything, although, that time spent could have been much more enjoyable if some of my family shared it with me. a one woman show ain't that exciting. usually when it comes to stuff of this nature its more like, i make, they sample, they comment and point out what to improve on, i make again, they sample.. and so on. i actually had the idea families prepared for the new year together. don't they? unless you count the time when the females of the family sat down and started discussing the merits of pure eggyolk or a little egg white mix as glaze for the almond crisps, i was pretty much alone. they did point out that the recipe i had used was an older version wchich should be altered slightly to give the cookies a nicer aroma. after about 200 of them came out of the oven already. go figure. well, at least it was a helpful comment. unlike the one that went, "aren't you going to mop the floor? it's sticky!" at the moment i was sitting down to enjoy my apple after finally clearing the kitchen and stacking the cookies. sigh.

but then again, my family hasn't enjoyed home-baked goods for new year's for a long time. at least after i leave, they have something made by me for them which they can savour for a while longer. at least i think they all like cookies, unlike the presents i bought for them at christmas. only popo and chris are utilising my gifts. christmas, yet another celebration where stef strikes out as the lone ranger. the tree, the gifts, the wrapping, the songs... but that is history.

maybe this happens only when it comes to trivial matters. they ARE flying to australia (for those of you who don't know, it is to UNSW i go) with me after all. free tickets, thanks to dad's frequent air travel. wish popo was going too, but that can't be helped i suppose. the trip for all of us should cost a pretty penny, and that alone shows how much my dad cares. my mum and popo are all hyped up, trying to get the necessary stuff to bring over. my brothers, erm, i think they just can't wait for my room once i move out.

as it is, if you ask me if i think my family is flawed, YES, i do. in more ways than i'd care to count. but, we're still a family, my family, whose love has kept me strong and given me support, and i wouldn't exchange them for anything.
